As a photographic artist and documentary photographer, I am drawn to making both artistically conceptual and contemporary editorial-style imagery. My goal as an artist is to explore the rich, interwoven tapestries of culture that link all parts of human nature together, encompassing themes of health, social politics and humanity’s relationship with the natural world, moving between genres of editorial, fine art and alternative process.
My personal experiences with health challenges motivate me to engage artistically with themes of mental health, disability advocacy and politics. My project 'Hard to Describe' used archive, abstraction and layering techniques to explore my diagnosis of ME/CFS, a debilitating condition with no known cure, at times adopting a level of abstraction that removes objectivity from the photograph, instead conveying the invisible. Hard to Describe has been exhibited at the Poly Arts Centre, Falmouth, and continues under the new name 'Behind the Veil'.
Additionally, I have made work exploring human-animal relationships, such as with my project Bred to be Fed, which critically explored the feeder animal industry as part of the booming popularity of reptile pet ownership.
